Born to a well-to-do family, Chummy was banished to boarding school. Her loveless childhood and ungainly height have made her shy and clumsy – two qualities that some would say would make her an unlikely midwife.

Call the Midwife's Chummy

Full name Camilla Cholomondely-Browne, and later Camilla Noakes, Chummy's height and clumsiness, yet all-round good naturedness, provide light relief at Nonnatus House.

However, on arrival at the convent, rather than being the butt of the jokes, she soon wins the admiration and love of her colleagues and the local bobby - and even learns to ride a bike.

Chummy later marries PC Peter Noakes and the pair spend time in Sierra Leone, Africa where Chummy has secured a position as a CMS missionary. On her return, Chummy discovers that she has come full circle and is now herself pregnant.

Chummy is played by Miranda Hart

Raised in Hampshire, Hart studied Political Science before doing a postgrad course in acting. Stints at the Edinburgh Festival followed.

Hart went on to appear in a number of sitcoms before starring in her own, most notably as Barbara, a clumsy cleaner in Not Going Out. She can also be spotted in smaller roles in episodes of Smack the Pony, The Vicar of Dibley and Absolutely Fabulous.

But it was the success of Miranda Hart's Joke Box on Radio 2 that propelled her to stardom. Picked up for a TV pilot, it became Miranda, described as an old school sitcom, complete with 'You have been watching' caption. With her role in Call the Midwife and appearances on Comic Relief, she is now one of the nation's most popular performers.
